Installing Vinyl or PVC Fence

A vinyl fence or a PVC fence offers considerable advantages over a wooden one. They are virtually indestructible, offer a wide range of colors and styles and are comparatively maintenance free. One of things that many DIY enthusiasts have come to realize is that it is very easy to install a vinyl fence or a PVC fence.
The process is very simple and involves following simple steps:

  1. First of all clean the area thoroughly. There should be no boulders or overhanging branches in the way. The ground should be free from the debris and stones.
  2. Drive a stake at each corner of the area to be fenced.  This is very important as the installation of the PVC fence is dependent on this step. Use a level to ascertain the correctness of the stakes. Tie a string near the top of the stakes. This will serve as the guide for the vinyl fence.
  3. Measure of eight feet from the first post and drive another stake into the ground. This will mark the position of the PVC fence post. Make sure that the stake is in level with the string. Continue driving stakes till the whole area to be fenced is covered. Confirm the straightness of each stake with a level and make sure that they are in line with the guide string so that every post of the vinyl fence is correctly installed.
  4. Dig a hole about two feet deep next to the first stake. Pour six inches of gravel into it. Slide the post into it use a level to confirm the position and angle. For PVC fence and vinyl fence, pour one feet of concrete in the hole around the post. Make sure that the post is straight and aligned to the guide string. Let the concrete set.
  5. Continue the process for each stake. Always check the level of the post. This is the most important step in the installation of either a vinyl fence or a PVC fence. When the concrete is dry, fill the holes with dirt.
  6. Next step in installing a vinyl fence or a PVC fence is the placement of picket fence panels. Insert the ends of the panel into the drilled holes in the posts. Slide them in until the self crimping lock “clicks” and locks the panels into position. Continue this process until all the panels have been installed. Make sure that the locks crimp by pushing until the sound is heard. This step is vital for the durability and safety of the fence.
  7. There might be additional panels that will require installation. This could be he decorative panels that go over the main picket panels. This is one of the most attractive features of a vinyl fence or a PVC fence. These additional panels add beauty and/or another level of safety to the fence.
  8. The last step is the installation of the top caps of the fences. There are self locking crimps on the caps that catch with a distinctive sound. Push the caps in until you hear the crimps lock.

Installing a vinyl fence or a PVC fence is a very straight forward process.  It does not require any special tools or a high level of technical knowledge.
