All about Radiant heating
Radiant heating is a wonderful and efficient way to heat up your home.  The idea of radiant heating came from the Roman Empire where hot water springs were used to circulate hot water under the floors. Radiant heating heats up your home from underneath the floor or from panels in walls and ceilings where plastic tubes or electrical cables distribute warm water. It is based on the thermal radiation principle which states that electromagnetic radiation comes from the surface of the heated item. Many homeowners are installing radiant heating systems in their homes due to the advantages given below.

Advantages of Radiant heating
Some of the benefits of having radiant heating system in your home are:
  • Radiant heating makes your floors, which get really cold in the winters, warm and cozy and thus you, can walk barefoot on them.
  • The rooms are heated evenly if you use radiant heating and there is uniform temperature everywhere.
  • People who have airborne allergies greatly benefit from radiant heating as the heat is not blown around the home due to which dust and pollens in the air are reduced.
  • Instead of blowing hot air around the home and outside, radiant heating keeps the heat inside your home and thus is thus cost effective.
  • As it circulates heat using the whole floor, wall or ceiling, radiant heating is more efficient than other heating methods.
  • Another advantage due to which radiant heating is being used in a lot of homes is that the heating system is not visible as it is installed under the floor or behind panels. There are no vents or radiators to be seen when you use radiant heating.
Different Types of Radiant Floors
There are three main types of radiant floors which you can use.
  • Radiant Air Floors: These types of floors do not give a lot of warmth and are thus mostly installed in commercial buildings.
  • Electric Radiant Floors: They are expensive but are good for heating several types of houses.
  • Hydronic Floors: They are usually used in homes as they are highly affordable.
Installation of Radiant heating on a floor
The method of installation depends on several things like whether radiant heating is being installed in a newly constructed home or a home constructed some years back, what energy source will you use, floor covering over the installed heating system and so on.
There are two methods for the installation of radiant heating namely the “wet” method and the “dry” method.
The wet method is used to install radiant heating on the ground floor. In this method heating panels installed on the flooring. After that a layer of gypsum or concrete is applied on the installed heating panels. The wiring and tubing is put between the two layers of flooring or concrete.
For installing radiant heating on the upper floors, the dry method is used. This method requires the mounting of the heating panels underneath the subfloor, on the subfloor or on the floor. The tubing or cables which carry the liquid medium are then connected to an appropriate source.
Thus using radiant heating in your home is a very wise choice as this method of heating is user-friendly, inexpensive and very effective. Moreover, if you install radiant heating, you will not have to put your feet on cold floor when you get up.
