Different Methods for Installing Garage Door Insulation
Many people think that garage door insulation is not as important as the insulation of other parts of the house. This is not true as garage door insulation gives you a lot of benefits. By insulating your garage door, you can reduce your energy bills, prevent moisture damage and keep insects and critters out of the garage.

Garage door insulation is particularly important if the garage is attached to your home. By insulating an attached garage, you will be able to stabilize the temperature in your garage as well as control the temperature in your house. This is because the temperature of an attached garage and your house are interlinked. The garage door is the biggest source of heat loss which results in a rise in energy bills. This is another factor which makes garage door installation really important
Buy a New Wooden Garage Door
One option for garage door insulation is to purchase a new wooden garage door which has natural insulating properties. However, if there are dramatic changes in the temperature in your area, then a wooden garage door will already be very heavy and thus your garage door insulation will not be very effective. In such cases metal doors will be better for the purpose of garage door insulation.
You can also buy insulated wooden garage door. This blends benefits of a wooden garage door with those of a metal garage door. The outer part or “skin” of an insulated garage door is made of wood which is professionally treated so that it provides insulation and look great. The inner skin of the door is also made of wood. A layer of polystyrene insulation is placed in between these two skins. This provides excellent garage door insulation and is lighter than a solid wood door.
Get a Garage Door Insulation Kit
There are many types of garage door insulation kits which make the insulation of a garage door easier. They have all the material you need for garage door insulation. Manufacturers of garage doors also sell kits which work with their doors. However, garage door insulation kits sold in hardware stores are a bit cheaper than those provided by the manufacturer but the quality is somewhat the same. These garage door insulation kits come with any of the following insulation material:
  • Fiberglass insulation: They have a washable vinyl finish and a fastening system. Usually 8 panels are used for a door.
  • Foam Panels: They come with polystyrene interior and laminate plastic to cover the panel for its protection and easy cleaning. You have to fit the panels in the channels of door rails.
  • Insulating foam: In this type of insulation, the material is injected behind a membrane of plastic fitted inside the door. The foam then bonds with the door.
  • Reflective foil: It is very easy to use a reflective foil kit for garage door insulation as the foil only has to be cut to fit the surface of the door and stuck inside it. This is best for doors which cannot bear the weight of insulation panels.
Garage Insulation without an Insulation Kit
You can also buy the supplies you need for garage door insulation separately and insulate the door yourself without a kit. You need to pay special attention to three areas of a garage door. These include inside surfaces of the door, the sides and edges of the door and its bottom edge. This method is somewhat difficult than using an insulation kit.
By using any of these methods, you can easily insulate your garage door. However, you need to see which method for installing garage door insulation is best for you by weighing the pros and cons of each method.
