How to Use a DIY Kit for Spray Foam Insulation
Purchasing a DIY spray foam insulation kit to insulate your home yourself is a smart choice. If you do the job of applying spray foam insulation carefully and correctly the first time then you can save a lot of time and money. The process of applying spray foam insulation in your home is similar to spray painting.

However, before you begin with the insulation, you should consider the risks involved in doing the job yourself rather than hiring a contractor. Take safety precautions such as wearing safety goggles and gloves while applying insulation. Also, remember that you can damage your property if you do the job incorrectly. So you should assess the risks and benefits of using DIY spray foam insulation kits before spending money on buying them.
Instructions for using a DIY kit for spray foam insulation
If you have decided that you want to use a spray foam insulation kit then you should follow the instructions given below:
  • First of all measure the temperature of the surface where the insulation has to be applied and the tank provided in the spray foam insulation kit and make sure that they are between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. They have to be warmed or cooled if their temperature is not between this range.
  • The second step is to clean the area where the foam has to be applied and remove any dust and debris. If any dust or debris is left then the spray foam insulation cannot be applied effectively.
  • After cleaning, connect the hoses to the tank by using a wrench which comes in the spray foam insulation kit.
  • The valves should be opened after connecting the hoses. Turn the valves counter clockwise to do this.
  • Next, put a nozzle on the face of the gun. The nozzle easily clips on to the spray gun.
  • After that, stand 18-24 inches from the surface where you want apply the foam and spray a layer of foam on that surface. The amount of the foam applied should equal the amount of paint used when spray painting.
  • Fill up the entire area by spraying the foam in a back and forth motion. The foam should be sprayed thinly. It will rise to about an inch tall.
  • Check if there are some spots that you have missed as missing spots make the spray foam insulation ineffective.
  • Let the foam dry for about twenty minutes after that. To obtain a higher r-value spray another thin layer of foam.
  • Shut down the valve and disconnect the hose from the tank. Store the spray foam insulation kit in a dry, cool, place that is out of the reach of children. The leftover material of the spray foam insulation can be used later on.
If these steps are followed carefully, then you will be able to insulate your house efficiently without the help of a contractor.
