Various Techniques for Roof Insulation
The roof is responsible for maintaining temperature inside a house. In order to prevent energy from escaping you need to have proper roof insulation. By having roof insulation you would not have to use your furnace that often and thus your energy expenditure will be minimized.

There are a number of options as far as roof insulation is concerned. Following are some of the options that you can consider for roof insulation.
Blanket and Rolls
Roof insulation through blanket and rolls keep your attic nice and cool. The traditional way of using blanket rolls for roof insulation is to spread them out and staple them to the rafters, which is very easy. The most common materials for blanket and rolls are fiberglass, plastic, mineral wool and natural fibers. Blanket and rolls are very effective in insulating the roof against heat conduction. However, blankets and rolls do not considerably block heat radiation.
Spray Foam Insulation
This technique for roof insulation involves spraying the material through a nozzle. Materials that are mostly used in spray foam insulation are polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, cementitious and henolic. Spray foam insulation spreads around every void and thus effectively blocks air infiltration through the roof and thus stabilizes the temperature of your home. However, this method of roof insulation requires installation of an air-to-air exchanger because it seals your house very tightly.
Radiant Barrier Foil
Many homeowners choose this method for roof insulation. It is laid over existing insulation and stapled to the rafters. Radiant barrier foil blocks 97% of the radiant heat and is therefore very effective for roof insulation. It is also the least expensive roof insulation method. Its main disadvantage is it is ineffective in insulation against conductive heat.
Radiant Barrier Paint
This method is similar to radiant barrier foil. However, this method involves painting the material rather than rolling it out and stapling it. You will need to hire professional contractors to apply it effectively. Moreover, it is not as effective as radiant barrier foil as it blocks only 75% of the radiant heat.
The best choice for roof insulation, in our opinion, is to keep the fiberglass insulation already installed and place a layer of radiant barrier foil on it. 97% of the radiant heat will be blocked through it and your house will also be protected against conductive heat transfer. You can apply roof insulation yourself by using this technique or you can hire a professional contractor.
