Faux Painting Techniques
Faux painting means using glaze and paints to make a surface look like something else. You can use faux painting to create finishes of stone, silk, marble, etc. You can give a sleek or an antique look through faux painting. A benefit of faux painting is that it is an inexpensive and easy way of renovating or redecorating your home. However, faux painting requires a lot of time.

Faux painting techniques generally fall into two categories namely additive or subtractive. Additive style of faux painting means adding color to a surface. Sponging is mostly used for this type. On the other hand, subtractive faux painting means removing the paint after applying it. Ragging is a very popular technique in this category. Some of the different techniques for faux painting are discussed below:
Sponging
Sponging is the simplest and the most popular faux painting technique. This technique involves the use of a sea sponge for applying the paint. You can blend different colors with the base coat to get the effect you want. You may also camouflage a damaged surface with this technique. Both glaze and paint can be used for this faux painting technique. Sponging is mostly done as an additive method but may also be used as a subtractive method.
Ragging
Ragging is negative faux painting technique. In this method you use a rag to paint over the base coated surface. The glaze must be of a darker shade than the base. You may roll the rag into a cylindrical shape or you make a wad out of it for this faux painting technique. Then remove the glaze that has been applies by dragging the rag. This method is similar to sponging but a rag is used in this technique instead of a sponge. It can done in an additive style to give the surface a softer texture.
Color Washing
A negative faux painting style, color washing involves applying the glaze over the base by moving your hands in a circular motion as if you are wiping the surface. Rags can be used to give a soft texture. You can also use a sea sponge to add texture. It gives a very natural look.
Strie
This is a negative faux painting method to give an aged look to a wall or any other surface. Roll glaze over the base cot and then make lines by using a wallpaper brush. The color of the tinted glaze must be darker than the base so that base is visible through the lines.
Combing
This faux painting method creates a dramatic appearance. It is a complex procedure which involves continuous dragging of a comb to get the desired impact. You can create different textures with this method.
Dry Brushing

This faux painting technique involves applying paint through a brush to create a textured appearance. You should use two to three different colors for getting the best impact.
Faux painting adds texture to the walls and other surfaces of your rooms and is not very expensive. You may need a whole day to complete the faux painting job. However, after finishing you can relax and enjoy the elegant look of your room.
