DIY Block Paving Instructions For Beginners

Installing bricks and blocks to construct a patio or a driveway is known as block paving. Block paving may seem like a tough job but in reality, it is easy even for those who are doing it for the first time. However, careful planning is needed before starting the process of block paving. This job involves various steps which are mentioned below.

1-Getting Started
Before beginning the process you need to select the material for the block paving. Some of the materials used in block paving are brick pavers, concrete blocks and stones. Choosing the materials beforehand makes the rest of process easier.
2-Make a Block Paving Design
After you have selected the material, the next step is to draw a block paving design for your driveway or patio. This will help you determine the number of blocks you will need. You also need to take complete measurement of the area you are going to pave before buying the blocks.
3- Gather the Materials Needed For Block Paving
The next step is to collect all the materials required for block paving. Items usually required include the blocks, a leveling device, grouting material and mortar shovel, plate vibrator and sub-base material.
4-Prepare the Ground For Block Paving
The first step for preparing the ground is to mark the area to keep your place. Next remove all plants and top soil from the ground with a shovel and dig deep for creating a downward slope. Level the ground for placing the rock after that.
5-Lay Sub-base Material and Sand
Compress the area by running a plate vibrator over it and fill sub-base material over any soft spots on the soil. Put edge-restraints along the area by setting them in concrete. Lay the sub-base material on the area within the restraints and put 2-3 inches of concreting sand on top of it.
6-Lay the Blocks
After preparing the ground, lay the blocks in the desired pattern. Do not walk on the sand while laying the blocks. If you are using stones for block paving, then put the pavers close together. You may also need to cut some blocks if they do not fit properly. After you have laid the blocks, fill the spaces in between by using mortar for bricks and block and earth for stones. Run a plate-vibrator on the blocks to compress the concreting sand, push it in the gaps and allowing it to settle there.
7-Put Finishing Touches
Avoid walking on the surface for a few days while the grout or mortar is drying. If you have used stones for block paving, then make sure that they are properly set before walking on them.
Block paving is the easiest paving projects that homeowners can do themselves. Moreover, you can have an attractive driveway, patio or garden path through block paving.
