How to Solder Plumbing Fittings made of Brass and Copper
  • First of all you have to choose the plumbing fittings which can fit into the plumbing pipes. This will help you avoid problems later on. You can ask the saleperson at the hardware store if you have any problem.
  • Wipe the outside of the pipes with an emory cloth. Then clean the insides of the pipes and plumbing fittings using a wire brush. Cleaning will increase the durability of the soldered connection.
  • Before sure to remove any objects which can catch fire before starting to solder the plumbing fittings. You should also do the work in a well-ventilated  place and protect yourself from the fire and the heat by wearing gloves and goggles.
  • Stick the plumbing fittings into the tubing or pipes and brush flux on the outside. After you have finished fitting the pieces together, you can solder the connection.
  • Open the gas valve a little to light the soldering torch. Use a striker to light the torch and make sure that there is a blue flame at the head of the torch.
  • Put a piece of lead free solder at an accessible place after rolling it out.
  • Heat the soldering conncetion you made earlier by applying the flame of the torch to the joint or the thickest part. Apply heat for bout 8-10 seconds.
  • Put one end of the solder in the joint. The solder will melt due to the heat and get wrapped around the fitting. Apply enough solder to fill th joint. You will know that the joint is completely filled with lead-free solder when the it starts dripping away from the connection.
  • Turn off the torch and allow the joint to cool before turing on the water. If you notice any leaks in thew pipes or around the plumbing fittings, then you will need to re-solder the joint.
