A Step-by-Step Guide to sealing Skylight Windows
Sealing skylight windows is necessary to prevent leakage of water. With the proper tools and a little bit of effort, you can easily seal your skylight windows. For this procedure, you will need roofing cement and a putty knife for application. The following steps are involved in the procedure.

1-Find the Leak
First of all you have to locate the source of the leak on your skylight windows and roof area. Determine whether the leak is coming from the skylight itself or is due to the moisture on the roof leaking through the skylight’s flashing.
Find out whether the skylight was installed properly. The skylight itself does not usually leak if it is installed properly. If the installation is not done properly, then the skylight windows will not be fully closed and water will enter the room through them. In this situation, you should make sure that the skylight windows are properly installed rather than applying caulk.
Leaks are common at the point of intersection between the roof and the skylight. The chances of leaks are more in low pitched roofs due to inefficient water drainage. In most cases, the problem originates from the flashing. Old and damaged shingles might also cause leakage of water.
Leaks in skylight windows are more complex in regions which experience heavy snowfall in the winters. The accumulation of snow and ice on the roof can result in an ice dam which leads to leakages. In such regions, simply sealing skylight windows may not be enough. Specially designed products may be needed to prevent leakage from the ice dam.
2-Seal the Flashing
For leaks originating from the flashings, you will have to move the shingles which are close to the skylight windows. Locate the intersection point between the skylight windows and the roof and apply roofing cement on this part. The thickness of the cement should be about a quarter of an inch.
3-Secure the Shingles
After applying cement around the flashing, spread it on the bottom of the shingles that are located around the skylight windows and attach them to the roof. The shingles have to be secured carefully in the area where they join the flashings. Apply more cement if it is required.
Spread cement on the top and edges of the shingles. Be careful when applying cement to the area above the skylight windows as water can flow down from here. Secure each shingle around the skylight windows carefully. Apply the cement to all of these areas until they are completely sealed.
After you are done with this procedure, you will never be bothered by leakages through the skylight windows.
